The dust is starting to settle, internal and partner reorganizations are being finalized and this should be our last virtual meeting on a first Monday.
Topic: Clippy the Maximizer
Generative models like ChatGPT, DALL-E, LaMDA, LLAMA, and numerous others are released every month. While they are undoubtedly useful to reduce repition for some mundane tasks, they are also more limited in what they can accomplish. Further the exact mechanics of exactly how they accomplish their tasks is far more mundane than most people outside the field of ML imagine. This has led many to imagine that these models are actually intelligent or even conscious.
While a terminator-style, machines taking over the world and subjugating humans threat is currently so small as to be nearly non-existent, that does not mean that these technologies are completely safe. Generative models give us the capability to create volumes of information in seconds to minutes that, while obviously computer generated on close inspection is convincing at a glance. This has disturbing implications for phishing, advertising, psychological warfare, and human mental health in general.
We'll explore some of these lesser discussed threats and what it will take to counter them as generative models become just another tool available to all the denizens of the internet.
